VALDOSTA — Dr. Haley Sherman from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the recipient of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s 2025 Blazer Creed Award for Citizenship.
As the Blazer Creed states, Â鶹ÊÓƵ is a learning environment based on trust and mutual respect, in which open dialogue, vigorous debate, and the free exchange of ideas are welcome. The university is dedicated to the core values of community, including a commitment to practice the following:
Civility — A Blazer shows courtesy and compassion as well as respect for the dignity of every human being.
Integrity — Each Blazer is responsible for his or her own actions, and our community is stronger when we contemplate the context of our decisions and uphold the principles of trust and honesty.
Citizenship — Every Blazer has an interest in the wellbeing of the community and, therefore, a duty to stay informed, to make positive contributions, and to offer support to those who need help.
Sherman exemplifies the value of citizenship through her dedication to her students, campus, and community. She fosters an inclusive classroom environment, mentors students in research and professional development, and encourages community engagement through volunteerism and service. Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to making a positive impact embody what it means to be an active and ethical citizen at Â鶹ÊÓƵ.
“Winning the Blazer Creed Award inspires me to continue pursuing excellence at Â鶹ÊÓƵ because it reminds me that my work and efforts do not go unnoticed,” she said. “It reminds me that it is important to not only work hard on my scholarship and teaching but to also engage with the wider Â鶹ÊÓƵ student body in a way that is meaningful and promotes professionalism and kindness. That is hugely important. People remember how we treat them and how we make them feel, so if I am able to be a good citizen to my fellow Blazers and leave them feeling seen and heard, I feel as though I’ve done my job to embody and promote good citizenship.”
Sherman joined the Â鶹ÊÓƵ faculty in August 2024 and currently serves as an assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychological Science.
She said that the best part of her job at Â鶹ÊÓƵ is “interacting and engaging with students. I enjoy the in-person classes that I teach and getting to interact with students that way, but my favorite way to engage students is in a one-on-one mentorship manner. I have come to realize that one of the best ways to do this is through research. Finding students who are interested and engaged in research is an amazing way to mentor and help them gain skills for life.”
