With a research agenda centered on increasing the participation of all students in science, Dr. Suriel emphasizes impactful curricula, pedagogy, and scientific argumentation. At Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, she has co-founded and led major initiatives such as TABLE (Together Advocating Belonging, Leadership, and Engagement). Her professional reach extends nationally as co-founder of Science Educators for Social Justice (SEEDS) and founder of the Latinx Research Group (LaRIG) within NARST. In addition, she serves on the editorial boards of The Urban Review and the Journal of Science Teacher Education and as a member of the Scholarship Committee at NARST.
Her scholarly contributions have been supported by more than $400,000 in competitive grants, including the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity award and the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Innovation Grant for interdisciplinary STEM learning. These projects align closely with her mentorship of teacher candidates, doctoral students, and early-career faculty, while also fostering collaborative partnerships beyond the university. She has co-led international initiatives such as the SEEDS Summer Institute in Costa Rica, underscoring her commitment to broad engagement and shared growth in science education.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Suriel has authored and co-authored 20 peer-reviewed publications, including journal articles and book chapters, and co-edited Equity in STEM Research: Advocating for Equitable Attention (Springer, 2022). Her scholarship has been featured in more than 45 refereed conference presentations at national and international meetings, including NARST, ASTE, SEEDS, NSTA, NAPDS, AERA, and NAME. Across her research, editorial leadership, and professional service, she continues to advance curriculum design, teacher development, and mentorship practices that strengthen classroom learning and extend the impact of science education.
